Here’s why I don’t want you to save the world

A story first.

If you’re new here I’m a former national security staffer turned spiritual teacher and biz strategist. Sometimes the national security shit circles back and helps me out.

One of my old battle buddies -

(who is a retired Marine, built like a brick shit house, and also the biggest empath teddy bear you’ve ever met, fuck you stereotypes!)

He was telling me that he had volunteered with some other vets and was supporting a part of the evacuation effort out of Afghanistan. (just making sure we’re clear, I’m not a vet, but he is)

He shared some whoa details that I won’t repeat here but I felt myself amping up. I felt the alert level turn on in my body and get ready to launch through the roof.

The wise ancient part of me quietly observed this and offered a crisp no-bullshit evaluation in the way she always does.

Is this what you’re called to do? She said.

I felt this question and held it in my body.

No, I said. This is old patterns, old resonance, old readiness.

All right then, she nodded.

And I listened to my friend and offered support and after a time I explained that I felt some tension. A part of me felt like I should help and a part of me knew that wasn’t mine to do.

Because my friend is wise as hell and has been watching me build this business for many years he reassured me, you’ve more than done your part. I still cried afterwards but my heart knew it was true.

Here’s what I want to share with you today…

When we make ourselves the savior of the world we take ourselves out of right relationship with the balance of things. We remove other people from the web of life. We zoom past the question, “What is ours to do?” And we start to treat people like objects along the way because there is an absurd and overwhelming amount to do and we think we have to do everything so the end justifies the means.

So here’s an alternative: Ask the Divine and your own inner wisdom, What am I called to do? And do that wisely and well. Show up with clarity and power and don’t hold anything back.

Here’s what I don’t mean: ignore the world, ignore the events around you, ignore how you can donate/increase visibility/support events that matter to you, ignore anything beyond the boundaries of your business.

What I do mean is: recognize where you are being called and show up for that with all of your power. You have a big enough job to do while you’re here without trying to do other people’s work too.

Listen to that voice inside of you that says, there is work for you here.

Listen to that voice inside of you that says, this is not yours to do.

This is much, much more nuanced than I feel like I can convey in one go but the Divine is putting this on blast right now so I have to try. Your boundaries around what is yours to do are necessary to the completion of your work during your time here.

If you don’t feel into the boundaries around what is yours to do and what is not, you’ll never find your footing and you’ll get swamped and bottom out. I hesitate to make it that raw but I am trusting that you will take what you need out of this and leave the rest. Your discernment is essential as always.

To knowing what we are called to do and showing all the way up,

Steph
